Black Friday: Who Did It Right? (Info on a Killer Price for an 46′ LCD HDTV)

November 23, 2007 · Leave a Comment

This year for black Friday I took on the masses and trekked out in search of some super deals. In particular I was looking for a specific 46′ Samsung HDTV. I had seen it around and knew that when black Friday came it would just have to go on sale and it did. The retailer that had it on sale was not near me so I wanted to see if I could go out to another retailer and get a price match so that I could have the TV sooner, like today. I went to several retailers and none would match the price online because it was a thanksgiving sale. Now thats just stupid to me. This TV was a top of the line model which normally sales for over $3000. One retailer had it online for $1100 less than the normal price. That jumped out to me to say the least.

Now I am not in retail so maybe someone who is can make me understand the rationale behind this. The TV that I wanted was a top of the line, big ticket item. Now whereas I am sure that retailers will move tons of HDTV this year, I am sure that the majority of them wont be in the 46 to 60 inch range. Why? Because the break the price point that most consumers are willing to spend right now.

You have the credit crunch we are in, the rising gas prices, and a country full of people with less disposable income. It would seem to me that the retailer I was at would have been in a rush to sell me this tv but they werent. So I guess my question is, “Is matching the price of another retailer and getting my business less important than not matching the price and not getting my business?” I mean if I am a retailer this time of year if I can get you to buy a product from me and not from my competitor I want you to buy it from me, or at least thats how I thought it worked. In the end none of the places I went would match the online price of this one retailer and so I ended up ordering the TV online from that retailer. Now they have my business and the others dont. More than likely I will purchase from them again because of this experience. It seems that some retailers are losing sight of the big picture, the customer’s perspective. When you talk about big ticket items whether it be electronics or cars, the lifetime value of a loyal customer far outceeds the return you get trying to lure them away from someone else. Also I thought that to most retailers go off the logic that if a person is purchasing a big ticket item they are more likely to purchase another big ticket item in the future.

In the end, I think that retailers should match any of another direct competitors prices, especially if its a black friday sale and its black friday. After looking at all the sales on internet and going to several stores there is a clear winner on black friday this year. When the final numbers come in I think the usual suspects will do ok, the Best Buy’s and the Walmarts of course, but a retailer that really for a long time was off my radar had just jumped back into my sights and in a big way with awesome service and great, and I mean great prices. So this year the retailer that went out on the biggest limb which I think will pay huge dividends for them is….Circuit City. Yep and oldie but a goodie. I dont know how long this sale is going to be on but I gotta put this link out. If you are in the market for a LCD HDTV that is no joke top of the line and the best deal on a TV I have seen in sometime you gotta go to this link and look at this Samsung 46′ LCD HDTV, on sale for $2299.
